about

When the world slowly started to open up again after an age of lockdown, and when a general sense of malaise at the state of the natural world seemed to prefuse everything, Michael Deragon turned to his love of the ocean, and in particular surfing on it, in order to find a musical rebirth from deep within himself and his practice. The result is the album DAWN, the musical exploration of thalassic reverence, a study of the sea in its many guises and of how the oceanic holds the profane and the sacred in its rolling waves.

Arranged and composed from Deragan’s vast range of synths, processed pianos, found sounds, torn loops, guitars and various other electronic percussive moments, DAWN is nevertheless always simple, singing with a clarity of vision. The music and sound tumble and morph from light and dark registers, bringing the listener on curious journeys from the light glinting on a morning sea surface, to subsea murk and darkness.

DAWN is an album that plays with the elements of an uplifting, at times spiritual natural phenomenon, a human playground that in Deragon’s compositions can evoke the haunting and fragile, how the ocean plants itself inside the unconscious. As these tracks rise and fall there’s a synaesthetic series of color lodged in the ear. And that if there could be a god on earth, it’s the endless ocean itself.
